You shoot films meaningful to you. It’s when you’ve gained technical control over using the screen. Film-making is arduous, too long a process, to commit one’s energy to do just anything. The nature and direction of persons attracted to arts vary, yet seek meaning, because, they are there for a purpose.
The act of search is what lends grace, than any occasional discovery in film-making. That underlines, your film is to be about something. There are a few questions the Director asks himselves when he selects a story.
- How am I going to use my skills?
- What kind of subject should I do?
- What can I be good at?
- What’s my artistic identity?
The life of a Director may be dramatic or ordinary, but he faces a conundrum ; you can’t make art without a sense of identity, yet its identity that you maybe seeking through making art.
We live in an age that elevates the notion of individuality. It tells us that self is that which is different from everyone else. Self-expression is another need of people who are attracted to arts. The cause and effect in life helps the filmmaker identify his vision to create vision.
Does this all matter in one’s career? Maybe yes, or not. But in the beginning, everyone of them are anxious to find what they are best equipped to handle. Its like defining oneself, before being identified as a director.
The director should find what his own life issues really are. Be honest in it. It’s not that easy because of the shimmering, ambiguous nature of actuality itself.

Cinema looks into the world rather than into a person or filmmakers. Follow your fascinations, find your work’s path, use your dreams, alter egos, be self-inventory, sincerely sign your identity, you are the Director.
