Cinema: Editing your ideas

The director has to begin his journey. He finds a story. Okay, now just watch those people who advice you a million as to where you are to begin.

Where do you begin?

You begin from an outline, right?
Here you are wrong!!!
That’s a later stage.

You begin from a gem of an idea, or a persuasion. In this column, I’ve asked you first “Is it a job?”

Yes, that is to be remembered always by the filmmaker. His best work comes from the artistic process, practiced in it’s purest form. Now, you have a doubt. I know it. You are asking me about this industry?
I can tell you, industry is a formulae. But, there’s something you have to learn from them too. But, later.

When you develop an idea, move slowly, carefully, and without preconceptions. Never get paralyzed by all the other creative minds who hunts your day. You just remember, no story is original. But don’t get into a judgmental mind. Does anything limit you? So don’t give the thought of being good or original to judgments, because, you borrow from a human story, from other creators.

Is it a limit for you?

You have limitless characters walking this earth’s face. You don’t need compunction when you borrow from life or any art, in making a film. Its a transformation from a myth or story with a special meaning. You have rights to change and frame a borrowed work, developing your characters, giving it a meaning and it will be, like, you drawing your life visually.

What comes to your mind is what you easily visualize. Now, Director, stay away from these:

1. Worlds you haven’t experienced and cannot closely observe.
2. Any ongoing, inhibiting problem in your life.
3. Anything or anyone that’s typical.
4. Preaching or moral instructions.
5. Films about problems to which you already have the answer.

Director, your films are your portfolio. Its your precious reel that tells others who you are, and what you can do.

When you film, take the hard way you’ve learned, apply it to your characters, and speak to the audience, human conditions.
